About Marine Intel
Marine Intel is a subscription app for game fishers across New Zealand who want to spend more time catching fish and less time wondering where they might be. With charts and marks updated twice daily, the app puts the answer in your pocket: where the best water is forming, why it matters, and the marks worth your fuel.
Bringing together satellite temperature, chlorophyll, currents, temperature at depth, thermocline and seafloor data, the app gives you the full picture in one place. Layered with real on-the-water experience, it turns complex ocean data into clear, practical intel, showing you where conditions are stacking up and helping you make better calls before you leave the ramp.
How Marine Intel Started
Marine Intel grew out of a gap. Water changes overnight and old data quickly becomes bad data, and while there is no shortage of ocean data around, very little of it is presented in a way that actually helps an angler decide where to go and how to fish it.
Marine Intel was created to bridge that gap by interpreting the data, filtering out the noise and delivering it fresh every morning and afternoon. It began as written reports. It is now an app, because the water does not wait for a report to be written.
Every morning and afternoon, the latest data is reviewed across every region, charts and marks are updated, and the conditions behind each mark are checked, so what you open reflects what the ocean is doing right now. About Matt
Marine Intel was founded by Matt, a South Island angler with a long-standing passion for fishing. His interest began early, chasing trout and salmon with his stepdad Graeme, before expanding through time spent working on a charter boat. That experience taught him the realities of putting customers onto fish and exposed him to pelagic fishing through the stories and lessons of skippers who had spent years chasing tuna and other species throughout the Pacific.
Life later took Matt and his partner Kate to Australia, where careers became the main focus for several years. Fishing never disappeared though, with regular missions whenever time allowed while living in South East Queensland. After moving back to Christchurch, a holiday to Nelson with his now wife Kate reignited that passion in a big way.
Since then, it has been hard to keep him off the water. From chasing kingfish locally through summer to becoming fully fixated on tuna and marlin around the South Island, and on regular trips back to Queensland, where he always finds time to get offshore with friends and family.
These days, when he is not building the app and helping Marine Intel members find fish, Matt is on the water most weeks chasing whatever the weather and season allow. He is constantly researching and expanding his knowledge of pelagic species in New Zealand, both on and off the water. He loves anything with a line in hand, but what really fires him up is helping others get onto fish they have only ever dreamed about.
The Marine Intel Difference
Every chart and mark in the app is backed by Matt’s research, interpretation and real-world fishing experience. Each morning and afternoon, the latest conditions are reviewed, marks are refined and charts are updated to reflect how the water is shaping up.
Marine Intel puts the marks worth fishing on the chart and tells you why. Tap a mark and you get the detail: the temperature across it and how sharp the edge is, the current in knots and which way it pushes, chlorophyll and whether the water is clean or too green, the depth and structure under it, the species in season on that water, and where the swordfish shelf sits if you are dropping deep.
The hot marks are the ones where three or more layers are holding a break in water that has held. With 19 regions, North and South Island charts, and neighbouring regions on the one screen, you can see what is happening beyond your usual patch too.

How You Access Marine Intel
Once subscribed, Marine Intel can be accessed from your phone, tablet or computer, with no separate app download required. Add it to your phone’s home screen for quick access whenever you need it.
Charts are updated every morning and afternoon, and regions can be saved for offline access before you head beyond coverage, with marks, readouts and tide tables available on the water.
You can also turn on alerts for your region so you know when fresh charts are ready.
Members have the option to join the Marine Intel Messenger group too, a relaxed, like-minded community where fishos share catches, flag upcoming trips and pass on real-time observations from the water.
